Survivability of Microbes in Natural Environments and Their Ecological Impacts
نویسندگان
چکیده
Microbiology often focuses on the growth properties or physiological capabilities of microbes. However, most microbes in the natural environment are not actively growing. As has been proposed for plants, microbial life strategies should consider stress tolerance as well as competitive relationships and physiological and biological disturbance (19). Reports studying microbial communities in oligotrophic or nutrientlimited environments have increased recently, e.g. (10), (21), and (41). How do microbes live? Do they mostly simply do nothing? Recent reports on microbial survivability, introduced in this Research Highlight, are providing informative answers for these questions, and discovering new aspects of microbial ecosystems.

Differences in Survivability under Starvation Conditions Among Four Species of Purple Nonsulfur Phototrophic Bacteria
Survivability under carbon-starvation conditions was investigated in four species of purple phototrophic bacteria: Rhodopseudomonas palustris, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, Rhodospirillum rubrum, and Rubrivivax gelatinosus. All these test organisms survived longer in the light than in the dark. ATP levels in the cultures were maintained in the light, which indicated that survivability was supported ...
متن کاملAssessing the Mitigation of Environmental Impacts of Using Renewable Resources in Rural Areas (Case Study: Nejobaran Village-Kermanshah- Iran)
This paper evaluates the changes in the ecological footprint index in rural areas by applying the replacement of renewable energy sources to fossil fuels. Population growth, and consequently increased use of fossil fuels, has resulted in various environmental degradation including climate change, global warming, and melting of polar ice. Detailed scientific analysis show that the buildings cons...
متن کاملغربالگری میکروارگانیسم های جدید و ژن های مفید آنها: از روش های سنتی تا متاژنومیکس
Metagenomics is a discipline that enables the genomic study of unculturaled microorganisms. Microorganisms constitute two third of the Earth’s biological diversity. In many environments, 99% of the microorganisms cannot be cultured by standard techniques. Culture-independent methods are required to study the genetic diversity, population structure and ecological roles of the majority of o...
متن کاملInvestigating Species Diversity of Family Brassicaceae along Khorramabad-Andimeshk Highway
To achieve sustainable development as well as the conservation of natural ecosystems and their biodiversity, it is necessary to study ecological foctors and their impacts on plant species diversity. The Khorramabad-Andimeshk highway was selected in the current study to investigate the diversity of the family Brassicaceae. The length of this highway is 100 km and its height ranged from 420 to 17...
متن کاملA network-based approach to disturbance transmission through microbial interactions
Microbes numerically dominate aquatic ecosystems and play key roles in the biogeochemistry and the health of these environments. Due to their short generations times and high diversity, microbial communities are among the first responders to environmental changes, including natural and anthropogenic disturbances such as storms, pollutant releases, and upwelling. These disturbances affect member...
